Common Household Pests We Treat Against

Spiders

Venomous Spiders in the St. Louis Metro-East Area

Let’s face it, very few people like spiders – it’s one of the most common fears. What’s even worse? Venomous spiders – now we’ve got your attention. Unfortunately, this area of the country does have venomous spiders that you should be cautious of. The Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders are the two venomous species of spiders in this area, and we inspect for and treat both species.

Brown Recluse Spiders

The Brown Recluse spider can be identified by its color, yellow-brown to dark brown with long legs extending up to an inch or two in length. However, the most telling sign is a brown violin-shaped or fiddle-shaped marking on its back. They typically hide from humans and can be aggressive if they feel threatened.

If you or someone you know is bitten by a Brown Recluse spider, it’s imperative that you seek medical attention immediately. While most bites are not fatal, the powerful venom can be especially harmful to children, the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, and other bite victims.

Black Widow Spiders

The Black Widow spider can also be identified by its markings – it’s color is shiny black, and it features a red, hour-glass-shaped marking on its belly. The female Black Widow is non-aggressive but will attack when provoked. By contrast, the male Black Widow can be identified by additional white or yellow markings on the side and being generally harmless.

If you or someone you know is bitten by a Black Widow spider, please seek medical care immediately. While most bites are not fatal, the powerful venom can be especially harmful to children, the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, and other bite victims.

Ants

Ants are one of the most common pests in this area of the country. In fact, there are multiple species that wreak havoc on homes and properties across the area. Ants live in colonies that consist of worker ants and their queen. The queen ant grows wings that help it leave the nest to start new colonies after the mating process is complete. Ants can be identified by a pinched waist, three distinct body segments, and bent antennae.

Outdoors, ants construct colonies in the ground, leaves, and other areas depending on the specific species. However, once inside the home, ants will seek out areas that are vacated such as the space between the drywall and are attracted to moist environments.

Common Ant Species

  • Carpenter Ants
  • Odorous House Ants
  • Pavement Ants
  • Pharaoh Ants

Cockroaches

Cockroaches may be the most dreaded pest on the planet. While they don’t hurt you directly, they can spread disease, and they’re just creepy, overall. Unfortunately for us, cockroaches also prove to be some of the most adaptable and durable organisms. Additionally, they’re one of the most common pests that people come into contact with.

There are many species that vary in color & size and they can be found in a variety of places that includes areas with moisture like bathrooms and kitchens; places with moisture such as ceilings, furniture, and walls; and even around garbage areas.

Cockroaches carry and spread disease. If you notice cockroaches in your home, clean the home thoroughly and call Brady Pest for an inspection to identify for proper treatment.

Rodents: Mice & Rats

Other disease-carrying pests that may invade your home include mice and rats. Both are small, flexible rodents that can take up residence in your home without you even noticing. However, it is important to note that mice and rats are drawn to cluttered environments and food crumbs. They can fit between walls, under doors and a whole lot of places you wouldn’t think they can get to.

Rats

Rats are the larger of the two species and the smarter of the two species. They’re wary of traps, and large traps must be acquired to accommodate for the size. Also, rats can carry over 30 diseases, making it extremely important to provide complete elimination if you notice the signs of rodent infestation.

Mice

Mice are the smaller of the two species and can easily be eliminated using poison and bait traps. However, mice spread just as many diseases, and you may not notice them until it becomes a serious problem. Watch out for the signs of a mouse infestation and call our staff for the services you need.

Signs of a Rodent Infestation

  • Droppings found on the floor, counters, or along walls
  • Urine markings
  • Scratch marks around food and food containers
  • Little feet marks
  • Squeaking or Rustling (especially at night)

Fleas

Fleas are parasitic insects that feed on the blood of a “host” animal. That host animal could be dogs, cats, humans, etc. Additionally, they feature six strong legs that allow them to easily jump from host to host. Also, they can lay and hatch eggs almost anywhere that they land, meaning you could have a flea problem for a long time.

If you have pets, it’s vital to check your pets for itchy red skin and the insects themselves, especially if the animal has been outdoors recently.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are also small, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of a host. They’re small, and they feature a rough exoskeleton that allows them to survive in beds. You’ll notice that you have an infestation when you wake up with bed bug bites and may notice shed exoskeletons on your bedsheets. These bugs don’t carry disease. However, bites may produce pain or an allergic reaction.

  • Heat Treatment
  • Steam Treatment – This kills bed bugs in all stages of development in those hard-to-reach areas and is chemical-free.

  • Follow-Up Services
  • Post-Treatment Preventative Care – Applying Mattress Covers, Box Spring Encasements

Centipedes

Centipedes are not really insects; they are arthropods that can be identified by many legs. Each set of legs represents a segment of the centipede’s body. Centipedes live in moist areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry rooms. Additionally, centipedes do not carry disease, but their bite can be quite painful, comparable to that of a wasp.

Silverfish

Silverfish are small, gray-silver bugs that are found in showers and around the plumbing. They can be identified by a small but long body with many sets of legs and two antennae. While this crawlies are creepy, they’re not dangerous as they don’t sting or spread disease. However, you’ll want to have them removed anyway – for your own peace of mind.
